Hey there,

We’re about a month away from the state’s target date of June 15th to re-open and questions swirl. You might already be re-integrating into in-person meet-ups, or perhaps you’ve decided to stay away for the time being. Whatever you might be feeling, check out Candice’s letter below for some of her thoughts, and be sure to look over our re-opening plans as of now, if you haven’t already.

And now for the important topic of naps! It seems there’s plenty of variety in our relationship to this resting tool. Thanks for playing along with us.

As we shared last week, our physical health is intricately tied to our mental health. Moving from naps to your heart and mind, let us know how you would rate your mental health, if you’re inspired to share. We don’t take lightly that talking about these issues may bring up shame or embarrassment, and we know that our mental health is a natural human response to our experiences (and to an extent, our genetics). We see you, without judgment, and you are a part of our community, period, no matter what.
I would rate my mental health
Mostly Excellent
Good
Fair
Poor
Very Poor

Director's Letter
As we all venture into our “new normal” as businesses are slowly opening back up, what does that really mean for us? I saw a gum commercial that was pretty humorous where it looked like the doors were opened and everyone comes running out into the light. There was glee and laughter as people entered office spaces that were overgrown and covered in ivy, and everyone was still in their sweats, pajamas and robes hugging each other. As I chuckled watching it, I couldn’t help but wonder how will this getting back to normal look?  In conversations with people, I find there is a caution, a hesitation to just jump into life as it was in the "before time." Like children, we lost that innocence of living life on our terms as we were forced to change everything we once knew. Over this last year and now as we move forward we are learning such valuable lessons about our adaptability, finding innovative solutions for whatever challenges we had to face. We are finding and holding precious the gifts that the difficulties of this pandemic has brought. When we are moved out of our comfort zones those challenges we face can spark new and exciting changes for us.

Here at The Center in the Programs department, we have been able to reach folks far and wide through Zoom and we are creating innovative programs for the future that incorporate the best of both worlds (in person and zooms). That would not have been happening were it not for the realities of this past year. Normal now is what we want to make it and that is exciting. The Center has been here for you and will continue to be here for you as we move forward.

Feel Good Story
Staff Outing!

Last Friday we left Palm Springs in our rear-view mirror and drove east through a world of rural, desert landscapes and agricultural farming. The buildings along the roadside are mostly single story, with homesteads scattered distances apart or clustered together for support. There's a feeling of pride from these communities in spite of disinvestment from county and government systems. As we entered the city of Coachella we were greeted by an explosion of color: brightly painted buildings and vibrant mural covered walls welcome you celebrating a different heritage and life. A truly uplifting experience.

We toured The Center Coachella’s offices, meeting rooms, and cyber center, vital resources for the local LGBTQ+ community and others who need it. It felt familiar, a mini-me version of The Center in Palm Springs, but situated in Coachella City Hall's building it has a distinct identity flavored by the surrounding community and the strong cultural heritage of residents of the Eastern Coachella Valley. The phrase "the same, but different," comes to mind. And that's poignant in our post-COVID world moving forward: how do we keep what works and not be afraid to discard what doesn't? How can we value and lift up our differences while celebrating our commonalities? The Center Coachella will provide some of those answers.
We toured nearby Mecca and Thermal, visiting neighborhoods where we are active partners in this work. Once again the feeling of pride and sense of community, two words familiar to LGBTQ+ folks, is evident everywhere, the resiliency inspiring. At North Shore Park we visited a cross-generational space created for everyone to enjoy. Dedicated play areas, areas of historical interest, and art spaces to relax and appreciate the incredible desert landscape we co-inhabit, all created by a community with inequitable resources but with an eye on inclusivity. And that was the take-away of the day. Moving forward in our world that was stopped on its axis, how do we want it to spin again? Helping others, valuing differences, embracing change, facing shared challenges seem like good ways to start. And soon, when The Center Coachella officially opens, we'll be expanding our role in the ECV!

They were here, and they were ours

Here we honor the memory of folks in our community who have passed.
