Drawing Boot Camp

6 Weeks - 12 Sessions (Tuesdays & Thursdays)

This class is for the beginner who wants to learn to draw as well as the established artist looking to brush up on basic skills. It is an intensive 6-week program in which participants will focus on shape, dimension, shadow and light, texture, perspective, scale, and other fundamental issues of drawing. Emphasis will be on learning to see objects in front of us in a way that makes it possible to effectively translate 3-D space to a 2-D surface.

This class is based on observation. It will utilize still life, beginning with basic shapes and progressing to common objects. Each class will begin with warm-ups, much like an exercise routine. The remainder of the session will be spent focusing on a particular aspect of drawing and may include technique exercises designed to expand specific skills. Class participants should be prepared to work hard in class and are encouraged to practice on their own between sessions. The effort will be rewarded with newly discovered or freshly honed skills.

What you need?

Materials List:

  • Selection of drawing pencils, including B, 2B, H, 2H
  • 2 charcoal pencils
  • pencil sharpener
  • kneaded eraser
  • standard eraser
  • blending stump
  • vine charcoal
  • view finder
  • sketch book, minimum 11”x14”
  • newsprint, minimum 11”x 14” (for use in warm up drawings)

Note: Suggested but not required items can also include larger sketchbook, graphite sticks, soft pastels. Some materials may be added as class progresses if students express an interest in exploring other drawing media.

Open Air Drawing

6 weeks - Wednesdays

This class is for the student who wants to utilize our varied landscape and urban scenes to expand their drawing experience. Still life is wonderful, but there is a whole world outside full of interesting subjects to explore.

We will discuss relevant ideas such as depth and scale, creating interesting compositions, isolating details for effective drawings, and use of materials in an environment that is less forgiving than the class room. Mostly, we will spend the class time drawing. Some experience is required. For the student new to drawing we offer Drawing Boot Camp sessions which meet at the Center.

What you need?

Materials List:

  • Selection of drawing pencils, including B, 2B, H, 2H
  • 2 charcoal pencils
  • pencil sharpener
  • kneaded eraser
  • standard eraser
  • blending stump
  • vine charcoal
  • view finder
  • sketch book, minimum 11”x14”
  • newsprint, minimum 11”x 14” (for use in warm up drawings)

Also important to bring for the Open Air Drawing class:

  • a folding chair
  • drawing board, and
  • the student’s favorite drawing tools

Note: Since we often experience wind in Palm Springs,it is suggested that clamps (large binder clips work well) be used to hold paper to the drawing surface. Also, don’t forget to bring a beverage and sun protection. In case of rain we will meet at the designated time at the Center. Suggested but not required items can also include larger sketchbook, graphite sticks, soft pastels. Some materials may be added as class progresses if students express an interest in exploring other drawing media.
