Hey there,

Letter from a Director
Life Is A Balance Between Holding On And Letting Go – Rumi

My heart has found its peace over the last months in the 8-fifteam zoom meetings with the Center staff, in the women who join me every Thursday on zoom for chat, and in the company of hikers that join me on Tuesdays and weekends. I exist in new ways in those relationships; they are deeper and more authentic as we find our strength in one another. I take more time to listen to the birds call forth the dawn and watch the northern visitors feast on the new seeds and blossoms on their way south. I am more consciousness of all the life that teems around me and I am so grateful for this messy, messy life I have lived. And I am grateful for the hard days, the hard weeks, and the hard years, they too have given me great gifts. I hope in new beginnings, we balance the I with the we. That we understand that when we share our gifts, our love and courage with one another and the planet, that we are all stronger, all healthier and all happier.

You may not know me, you may not know anyone at The Center, you may be a member or not, you may have been in one of our programs or not, just know we are thinking about you, hoping you are doing okay and if there is something we can help you with, we are here for you.

Video Storytelling Project

Over the past six-weeks, we’ve shared weekly videos to let our community know all the ways we’re here for you. From the Food Bank, to Behavioral Health, to showing up for more geographic places in our desert communities, and how this pandemic has affected us all, we’re building and sustaining a vibrant community that you are very much a part of. Take a look on our website for them all, and share with the folks in your life who might be moved or inspired to join us, online, out in the world, and most importantly, in our community.

Last week we shared some facts about our Eastern Coachella Valley communities to see what you knew. Here's what the results were:

Knowing facts about a place, whether our own, or neighboring communities, is one thing. It's another to experience a community's culture, people, and see it's resourcefulness in action. If you find yourself wanting to know about the beauty and strength of our region, from east to west and north to south, we invite you to start with Estamos Aquí, a community documentary that focuses on uplifting the stories of the Eastern Coachella Valley. Watch this 30-minute documentary on Facebook here.

COVID-19 Impact Survey
While the COVID-19 pandemic continues, here @ The Center we've teamed up with some of our organizational partners to better understand how this pandemic has impacted the lives of our friends and neighbors — that means you! — on an ongoing basis. Let us know your experience in a short survey at the link below. The survey is anonymous and will take about 10 minutes.

PS: The email address collected from you will only be used to send you follow-up surveys to check in on how your perceptions are changing as the pandemic unfolds. You may choose to opt out of these future monthly surveys at any time by clicking the “Unsubscribe” link in those emails.

Feel Good Story of the Week

Moving through this time with love

As we settle into the holiday season – one that is looking decidedly different for many of us – our minds go to family. For some of us, kinship isn’t rooted in our families of origin (whether born into them or adopted or otherwise) because of stigma and prejudice about who we are. As we continue our work though, we recognize that while that is still the case, things are also changing.

A couple of months ago, our Director of Community Engagement was invited to be a part of an LGBTQ+ Family Forum with Palm Springs Unified School District, to talk through LGBTQ+ student rights in schools. On a Thursday evening, after long days in school and at work, Lex met with nearly 10 different families, from varying locations (like Orange County!), cultural and racial backgrounds, and even with different language needs. Some were people from families with LGBTQ children, including trans kids, and some were just there because they wanted to learn how to be a better ally out in the world. The common denominator – they all were leading and moving through their lives, with love.

Whether we get to chat with parents, or directly with LGBTQ youth, like in our weekly youth Zoom group, working with young people, all people, and families of all kinds, reminds us that this extended family – this community – is who we want to celebrate during this special time.

They were here, and they were ours

Here we honor the memory of folks in our community who have passed.

Toby Wiggin (1950-2019)
Toby was a friend and an excellent artist. A very generous spirit, he made paintings and handicrafts that he gave to friends. He was a good hiker and a good sport. I miss him! J.A.Tuttle

Duane Rayford (1958-2016)
Duane moved to Palm Springs from San Francisco. He was an excellent cook, and host. He loved to entertain. His annual birthday dinners were treasured. He was a dear friend, who is greatly missed.

Bill Brengetto (1955-1997)
Just want to honor my daddy Bill lost many years ago on the 16th of November. He is missed every day. I thank him for giving me a sense of self-worth and self-esteem and being my mentor and lover. - tlc
