Hey there,
Whether you honor Pride, Juneteenth, the Pulse survivors, or anything else this month, you can do it in community in the Coachella Valley. Check out our regular programming, Community Events, and more below.
Thanks for those who participated about their relationship to our beautiful desert communities.
In thinking about Pride this month, we’re thinking about the street kids, draq queens, and trans folks that started the Stonewall Uprising and other uprisings that happened across the country in the mid-twentieth century. We’re thinking about pushing back against police harassment and about all the people are denied their humanity because of homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, racism, and more, and all the beautiful flags that represent all the different parts of our community.
Reflecting on Gilbert Baker’s original Pride flag, let us know:
Which of these original colors and intentions are you vibing with?
Hot pink = Sex
Red = Life
Orange = Healing
Yellow = Sunlight
Green = Nature
Turquoise = Magic/Art
Indigo = Serenity
Violet = Spirit
Director's Letter
June 15th is announced as the return to normal date. But is the before COVID date really a normal environment for our species? For tens of thousands of years, we existed in tribes, where wealth was shared, where we looked after each other. Everyone was needed, everyone had a role. The young were given duties as soon as they could perform them, the old became the teachers, and the keepers of stories and oral history.
Today we live a society where being wealthy is valued more than being of service. So many in our community feel isolated and feel their lives are without purpose. We live in a constant state of stress, we worry about the news, about finances, about medical bills. We are not plugged into each other or the natural world, just the stream of news and entertainment on the TV and internet.
During the time of COVID, I led a women’s hike twice a week. Over the hundreds of miles we covered, we told our stories. We looked after each other, helped each other and we gave each other breathing space. Some were stronger, some knew the flowers and animals, some were photographers. Someone’s keen sense of adventure inspired others to push the boundaries of their comfort zones. We learned to cherish our individualism, and we learned to function as a tribe finding strength in each other, finding purpose and finding a sense of comfort and belonging to one another. Without all the normal distractions that our society offers, hiking allowed us space to grow deep friendships.
We may be able to return to the pre-COVID normal on the 15th but I think I want a new balance, a new normal. I don’t just want distractions and entertainment and new things, I want the deeper connections, I need to know that I belong, that I am valued and that who I am contributes to something larger than myself. One of our goals at The Center is to make space for such a community. We are here for you, but we need you as partners. COVID was a pause, let’s think about how we want our community to function before we hit the play button.
